nn nn   nn nn Main Objective: nn nnThe Principal Packaging Systems Engineer will enhance device assembly, packaging and labeling operations through the development of new equipment, systems, and processes in a fast paced, high growth environment.  The principal engineer will effectively deploy technical and project management skills to implement systemic and complex engineering projects ranging from packaging equipment installations to rapid tool development methods to development of lean material handling solutions.  This role will assist in the development and implementation of the strategic direction for the department.nn nn Essential Duties and Responsibilities: nn Develop strategic roadmap for the AMI Packaging Engineering organization including Packaging Design optimization, package processing equipment advances, WIP packaging designs, reusable systems, and acceleration of new product packaging introductions.

Analyze designs and packaging component costs against packaging fabrication equipment options and propose solutions.

Perform financial analysis of various business approaches to optimize costs, provide scalable solutions, and reduce implementation timelines.

Implement internal tool development and package prototyping programs to accelerate design release timelines and reduce total cost.

Support operations during the design, development and verification testing of new packaging processes.

Apply previous experience with package testing and aging, including ISTA and ASTM procedures and interpretation of results to support lab operations during execution and verification of new processes.

Leverage expertise and maintain strong relationships with internal SMEs, contractors, equipment manufacturers, and suppliers.

Create packaging equipment specifications including software, functional, and user requirements to provide the required technical information necessary to support build and qualification activities.

Recommend techniques to improve and/or cost reduce existing products/processes including source reduction strategies.  Plan, schedule, and collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders affected by packaging projects to achieve project deliverables and milestones.

Generate cost savings by recommending new materials or design modifications.  Resolve packaging issues by using critical thinking skills and DMAIC techniques.

Apply experience and proficiency in packaging materials and processes, global distribution environments, problem analysis and resolution, statistical methods, and design of experiments in executing equipment and improvement projects.  Draft and execute statistically based equipment validation studies and required qualifications.

Apply Lean Principals and concepts to optimize process flows related to equipment projects during implementation.

Remains current on test method revisions, domestic and global regulations, and compliance deadlines related to packaging and labeling.

Domestic/international travel up to 10%.

  Education and Experience: nn Bachelor’s degree in Packaging or relevant Engineering or Technology degree required Master’s degree preferred 15 years of experience required Experience in the medical device industry or other FDA regulated industry is preferred.

Familiarity with plastics processing (e.g.

Injection molding, extrusion, vacuum forming, laser cutting, die cutting) and related tooling design and development strongly desirable.

Experience with 3D printing desirable.

nn   Knowledge and Skill Requirements/Specialized Courses and/or Training: nn Ability to organize and present technical data, strategic proposals, and financial analyses at the executive level is required.

Project Management skills specifically related to the implementation of packaging equipment and cross functional material handling systems desirable.

Working knowledge of sterilization processing for single use packaging systems.

Expertise in SolidWorks desirable.

nn  Machine, Tools, and/or Equipment Skills: PC and various data, text and graphics software programs.

Testing equipment used to acquire data on package performance.

  Language and Communication Skills: Ability to comprehend and apply language skills to the degree required to perform the job based upon the job requirements listed above.  Ability to verbally communicate ideas and issues effectively to other team members and management.  Ability to write and record data and information as required by procedures.
