Our location in Lake Forest, IL currently has an opportunity for a Director, Division Molding & Packaging within our Diagnostics division.

WHAT YOU’LL DO: The Director, Division Molding & Packaging is accountable for the whole of the lifecycle of commodities, packaging, and labels across Abbott Core Diagnostics.

This includes the translation of the customer and regulatory requirements to product and mold design, through build oversight and qualification.

The position has full responsibility for the defining and executing to the capacity requirements for all Core Diagnostics commodities and packaging to meet business demand.

Key member of the Division Engineering leadership team, managing a large team of experts to ensure timely project execution, ensuring technical relevancy to meet evolving business challenges.

Providing on-market and manufacturing production support, and deep SME guidance for new product development and to other Abbott divisions.

Responsibilities: Responsibility for the Core Diagnostic commodity and packaging manufacturing strategy, this includes the product and mold design, supplier selection and qualification.

Building the annual and long-range capacity and capital plan to meet Business growth targets.

The commodity strategy directly impacts the viability of Core Dx to meet their business objections; capacity, differentiating performance, quality, and margin.

Leadership role in the planning and implementation of new technologies and products, and support products through full lifecycle.

Provide technical input and guidance to the cross-functional team during development.

Works with Division VP’s to develop an integrated manufacturing strategy to meet long-range business objectives.

Partners with peers in R&D, Commercial Ops, and Global Engineering Services to support new product, on-market and long-range strategies.

Oversees suppliers in the transfer of new commodity designs, incorporation of innovative technologies and processes to deliver enhanced performance, quality and/or margin improvements.

Accountability to ensure suppliers have the infrastructure and capabilities to deliver to Core Dx near-term and long-term demand.

Responsible for the planning and execution of implementing additional production capacity as required.

Deep systems integration knowledge, working within evolving instrument & assay requirements while meeting customer needs, launch timing, capacity, and cost targets.

Lead the development, and accountable for the execution, of the long-term commodities manufacturing road map including the assessment of new suppliers and the management of the ramp-down of legacy platform commodities.

Design and documentation for all manufacturing production lines, to assure there is properly documented change control and documents are compliant with regulatory agency requirements.

Stay abreast of the technological advances in the engineering and other technical fields along with changes to the safety and performance standards.

Provide technical direction to a complex, diverse manufacturing and R&D organization to optimize overall productivity in a strictly regulated environment.

Assures a technical partnership and a favorable business relationship.

Staffing and development of professional molding, mechanical, controls and packaging engineers for product design equipment automation and testing.

Maintain worldwide database for molds and molding capacities to assure reliable, high quality plastic commodities and finished product.

Creatively modify equipment designs to reduce costs based on new/revised equipment both within Abbott facilities and at molding vendor sites.

Scope: $25-50MM annual budget for purchasing new molds/dies and accompanying automation, with annual budgets of $3-5MM department and $3-5MM project expense.

Management of a team of 20 product design, molding, and packaging engineers; ensures technical relevancy to address evolving business challenges.

Establish the strategic direction for molding and packaging components for the Core Dx business, including business continuity risk and environmental sustainability considerations.

Participate with recognized industry groups to stay current with latest available molding, packaging, and automation technology and practices.

Maintains active relationships with external professionals, universities, and trade associations.

Recognized internally and externally for expertise in molding and packaging technology.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING: Required Bachelors degree required; degree in Engineering preferred (Molding /Automation/Packaging Engineering).

Position requires 10-15 years of Engineering in an agency regulated manufacturing environment including 3-5 years of program/department managerial experience.

Work experience could include up to 5 years of product or packaging development experience instead of Engineering.

Experience utilizing financial modeling/forecasting to support decision making (cost of product and capital investments) and budgetary responsibility.

Demonstrated diplomatic professional skill necessary to effectively function in a multi-site, multi-business matrix environment.

Preferred Experience utilizing financial modeling/forecasting to support decision making (cost of product and capital investments) and budgetary responsibility.

Knowledge of design control, and risk management practices as well as a working knowledge of FDA Quality System Regulations and PMA / 510k filing requirements.

Knowledge of diagnostics products a plus.

Strong leadership skills, including the ability to set goals and provide positive and constructive feedback respectfully to build positive relationships and improve business results.

Ability to work effectively within a team in a fast-paced changing environment.
