Tax Manager – Exempt Organizations

The Cherry Bekaert Nonprofit Group serves over 1,000 clients in the tax-exempt sector including colleges and universities; charitable and social service organizations; cultural and arts organizations; community and private foundations; healthcare providers, private/public schools, religious organizations; trade associations; and social clubs.

We provide accounting and consulting services to our clients including delivering attest services, financial planning, tax consulting and compliance, and business process consulting services.n nThe Exempt Organizations Tax Manager will work on a national team that develops the vision and strategies for the Cherry Bekaert’s Nonprofit Tax Practice; a great opportunity for continued advancement without having to continuously relocate.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for working on tax compliance and consulting engagements for nonprofit clients across the firm’s 26 offices covering nine states.

Responsibilities include interacting with clients to provide innovative tax planning, consulting, and compliance expertise; working closely with partners and managers on business development activities; and mentoring and supervising staff.n nSpecifically, the primary responsibilities of the Exempt Organizations Tax Manager are focused in the following areas:n Tax Compliance Tax Research and Consulting Project/Task Management; Staff Supervision; and Business Development n n Tax Compliancen Detail and quality reviews of returns for tax-exempt organizations, including Forms 990 and 990-T.

Detail and quality reviews of returns for private foundations (Form 990-PF).

n n Tax Research and Consultingn Research various tax issues affecting tax-exempt organizations by using the Internal Revenue Code, regulations, rulings, case law, and other relevant authorities/guidance.

Draft technical tax memoranda, client correspondence, and other various work products.

Prepare exemption applications and ruling requests.

n n Project/Task Managementn Accept responsibility for, and complete tasks assigned by Cherry Bekaert management in a timely fashion.

Manage multiple client projects at any given time.

Develop a professional relationship with the client.

Gain the respect and confidence of the client by consistently demonstrating supreme customer service, quality work products, and professional integrity.

n n Staff Supervisionn Manage staff’s activities, chargeability, and budgets.

Effectively delegate work to staff.

Provide regular performance feedback as well as deliver timely performance evaluations.

Develop staff’s technical and industry skills and encourage growth.

Participate in developing internal training courses for staff.

n n Business Developmentn Identify and pursue outside business contacts through social, charitable, and business organizations.

Become an active participant in these networking channels.

Pursue professional development through public speaking opportunities, seminar delivery, and through the writing of articles.

Assist in preparing proposals and presentations.

n n Qualifications Includen Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.

Masters and/or JD helpful, but not necessary.

Must be CPA certified and have an active CPA license.

Minimum of 4 years of experience at a large local, regional or national public accounting firm, with a substantial dedication of time to providing nonprofit tax compliance and consulting services.

Strong tax research and writing skills is essential.

Superior client-serving capabilities.

Ability to multi-task, including excellent project management, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
